Allergy Remedies that Work

Our Favorite Allergy Remedies

It’s that time of year again: sniffly, itchy, sneezy allergy season! When it comes to allergies, herbal formulas can help treat the annoying symptoms and provide significant relief.

My Favorite Formulas for Alleviating Allergy Symptomsdhist-300x300.jpg

We have a variety of herbal formulas and supplements available depending on your particular set of symptoms. Do you suffer from itchy eyes? Stuffed sinuses? Trouble breathing? Sneezing and runny nose? It's always good to get a specific recommendation for your particular set of symptoms, but in general here are my favorite formulas:  Natural D-Hist and D-Hist Jr. The same formula in children’s and adult’s dosages, I really like this particular supplement. It contains Quercitin, which helps to stabilize mast cells, the cells that release histamines and other substances during allergic reactions. It also contains N-Acetylcysteine which helps thin out mucous and reduce inflammation.

Herbal Decongestants

There are several different Chinese herbal formulas that I prescribe to treat severe nasal congestion. I often combine them with Natural D-Hist for a stronger effect. One traditional remedy I like is called Pei Min Kan and it comes in tiny tea pills. Another liquid tincture I often recommend is called Head Clear, which helps nasal congestion along with itchy eyes and the lightheadedness  associated with nasal congestion.  Purge Sticky Stuff (Yes! That's really the name) helps to clear thick phlegm that gets trapped in the sinuses.

What else can I do?

Nasal Rinsing

I highly recommend daily nasal rinsing with a neti pot using a saline solution. For chronic nasal congestion, nasal rinsing 2 - 3 times a day should improve your condition. The longer your body stays in contact with allergens and the longer the allergens stay in your sinus cavity, the stronger your body’s reaction will become. By rinsing the allergens out, you’re diminishing contact with the allergens and reducing your body's reaction.

Acupressure and Acupuncture

Regular acupuncture treatments for those who suffer from severe seasonal allergies are definitely recommended. There are also a few points I can suggest to help alleviate symptoms while at home in between treatments. Pressing either side of the nostrils for 15 - 30 seconds 3 times a day may help manage symptoms and unclog nasal passages.
